RE: Do you pull the WDH when you disconnect?

I put a plastic cap over the ball and then place the hitch and bars in the front storage area of the TT.
Exactly what I did with the Equalizer hitch I had. The TT had a front storage compartment that worked well and made for a short carry! The 12,000 lb. hitch isn't exactly light weight!

RE: Does Your Rig’s Ton-Miles Make You Feel Better?

The train ad is comparing train mileage to driving the car, not to shipping it on a truck.
True, but imagine the "ton-mileage" efficiency rating of a train full of RVs: http://www.trackstoadventure.com/ !!!

RE: What did they make in the late 70's early 80's?

The VW "Vanagon." I think - unless that was even earlier in the 70s.
I know this isn't a serious option, but FYI Vanagon's first year was 1980 and they did have several camper conversions. You'd have to go to a bay window vw bus before that. I've had 3 Vanagon's - truly a no-frills B-class?!?!

RE: Purchasing the right trailer for me......

My parents lived in a Pop-up tent camper at one point, so it is possible. Kknowlton is right on this one, though. You'll get a trailer at some point if you want one, but they end up being more $$$ than you think! Good luck and good for you toughing out the school thing while working - it will pay off in the long run!

RE: Honda Element based... ECAMPER™

Sounds like some of us just need to return to our roots and go back to the old pop-top VW buses/ vans! (guilty!) Those pop-top full-sizers are awesome, though, ARcruiser.

RE: When's Your First Trip of the Season?

Glad to see a few "PA" folks weighing in - depends on the part of the state for the weather! Down here it's not too bad and we hope to get out within the next month or so... We've been on New Years in the past, however!

RE: 2007 Chevy Suburban

Thanks for the good info. The new 1/2 tons sometimes get a bad rap, but with the 6.0 and 4.10 rear, sounds like a solid set up for you. Congrats and thanks again for sharing.

RE: Tahoe or Yukon? Who has them and what do you tow?

I'd probably go for the Suburban/Yukon XL
Again, I'm biased, but the Suburban/ Yukon XL is a great tow vehicle. Not to mention the added interior space.

Another vote for suburban here, but I am biased! We've loved ours - never short on room or power!

RE: Pulling a 2000 Pound Trailer

I'd go with a full ton dually pick-up - probably crew cab, long bed Diesel! You can never have too much truck!! (ok, I kid, but you never know when bigger trailer itch will come along... and some think you need this size truck right away!)
Good luck with whatever you decide and agreed, those T@B trailers are quite contemporary!

RE: Sticker Shock

Buy gently used. Got our 04 Lariat with 19,000 miles on it for 21K
Agreed. Slightly used always saves you a ton... but there's nothing like that new car smell (unless you use the air freshener with that name?!)

RE: OK, another newbie TV thread...8.1L vs. Hemi vs. V10

Another vote for the 8.1 here - love it in the suburban. MPG difference is not great enough to go to a small block. Plus, you'll want a bigger trailer later - don't we all!?!?
The 8.1 is a great engine. Whatever you decide, it will be an improvement over what you have. As you said, make enough of an improvement to feel justified with the change and protect you for future changes.
Good luck!

RE: Do you lock your pets inside when gone?

We leave them at home in crates and if there is a power outage there, it means no A/C and no heat: Same as in the RV.

The roof top antenna must be an HD antenna - if so, and your TV will display HD signals, you're in business!

RE: What do I neet to tot 35' 10,000 TT?

there is about an $11,000 difference that would buy a lot of fuel to go RVing
Unfortunately not as much as it used to!
I would say Most 3/4 tons would be fine, provided proper hitch/ brake/ etc.
Congrats on the new rig!

RE: buying a prior salvage vehicle. Run away??!

I've purchased a salvage titled vehicle in the past and had difficulty with it. It was a left rear 1/4 panel damage, or so they said. Sensors kept coming up with codes and when I did try to get rid of it, no one wanted it. If they'll stand behind it, warranty it and you plan on keeping it a long time, maybe. But there are always other deals to be had. Just my .02.

RE: Tow MPG with 6L Yukon or Suburban?

I know you said 6.0, but just as an FYI, I get 8-9.5 towing 7,000 lbs. with the 8.1 and 3.73 suburban. Not saying the 8.1 is absolutely necessary here, but it is nice to have.

RE: 2000 Yukon XL 1500 do I have enough truck

I tow with a 2500 Suburban with the 8.1. No problems with weights at all and rides smooth when unloaded thanks to proper tires and 2002 suspension vs. older models. A tow beast by SUV standards. Something like this may be an option for you.
